Mission Statement

The Jefferson Sportsmen’s Association is organized to conserve, restore, and manage the game, fish and other wildlife and its habitat in Jefferson and the surrounding area; to seek to procure better fishing and hunting for sportsmen; to promote and maintain friendly relations with land owners and sportsmen; to cooperate in obtaining proper respect for, and observation of, the fish and game laws; and to spread knowledge of useful wildlife among the resident of Jefferson and vicinity.

Hunters Code of Ethics

 

  1. I will consider myself an invited guest of the landowner and get their permission before
    using their land.
  2. I will obey rules of safe firearm handling and encourage others to do so.
  3. I will obey game laws and regulations and insist that my companions do so as well.
  4. I will acquire good marksmanship and hunting skills to ensure clean, sportsmanlike kills.
  5. I will support conservation efforts to ensure hunting in future years.
  6. I will help other hunters learn skills and attitudes necessary to allow them to become true
    sportsmen.

The Ten Commandments of Gun Safety

Guns are not toys, they must be handled properly. NEVER handle a gun without adult
supervision. NEVER let anyone you are with mix alcohol, or drugs and guns. ALWAYS
follow these IMPORTANT safety rules.

  1. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
  2. Guns should be unloaded when not actually in use.
  3. Don’t rely on your gun’s “safety”. Treat every gun as if it can fire at any time.
  4. Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.
  5. Use correct ammunition.
  6. If your gun fails to fire when the trigger is pulled, HANDLE WITH CARE. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and get adult help.
  7. Always wear eye and ear protection when shooting.
  8. Be sure the barrel is clear of obstructions before shooting.
  9. Don’t alter or modify your gun, and DO have your gun serviced regularly.
  10. Learn the mechanical and handling characteristics of the firearm you are using.
    Do not use any firearm that you have not had adult instruction in handling.
